In a globalised world experiencing increasingly pronounced migration phenomena, the linguistic mediator specialised in Applied Multicultural Design and Interaction represents a key figure in meeting the needs of the new and heterogeneous social landscape. The Intercultural Mediator is a professional who carries out linguistic interpreting, translation, and cultural orientation activities, serving as a "bridge" between the needs of foreign nationals and the services offered by Italian public bodies and private organisations. However, their role is not limited solely to interpreting or translation services. The reasons that make the mediator's presence a useful and necessary resource are due to factors that depend above all on the context in which the mediation takes place and the nature of the problem/conflict to be resolved, which may be cultural, health-related, educational, or linked to bureaucratic procedures.

A great added value of this specialisation is the opportunity to prepare for a professional career in various fields, such as: Justice, Education, and Social Welfare.

Restorative Justice: with the legislative decree implementing delegated law No. 134 of 27 September 2021 (the "Cartabia Reform"), the "organic framework" for restorative justice was definitively approved. The idea of restorative justice, in its contrast with traditional punitive justice, is undoubtedly revolutionary, as it is a model of justice essentially founded on listening and recognising the other. The Intercultural Mediator's task is therefore to pursue a "parallel" path aimed at resolving the conflict: not an alternative justice to traditional justice, but a resolution of the conflict, with the aim of promoting social reconciliation.

Education: the Linguistic-Cultural Mediator is a highly sought-after professional figure in the school environment who facilitates communication between schools and the families of foreign pupils, assisting with student integration and mutual understanding between different cultures. Their duties include translation, linguistic mediation during meetings and consultations, interpretation of cultural meanings, and the organisation of intercultural projects to promote inclusion.

Territorial Welfare: the mediator serves as a bridge between different cultures, facilitating access to services for immigrants and promoting social cohesion. Their functions include supporting communication and understanding between foreign nationals and institutions, intervening in conflict resolution, and fostering integration within the community.

This specialisation therefore prepares you to become an Intercultural Mediator with specific competencies in Restorative Justice, the Educational Sector, and Territorial Welfare.

The subjects you will study, specific to this specialisation, fall within the following areas:

  • Ethno-Anthropological Area: Cultural and Gender Anthropology (BIOS-03/B), Methods and Techniques for the Assessment and Support of Victims and Offenders (GSPS-07/B);
  • Legal Area: International Law (GIUR-09/A), Restorative Justice Models (IUS/16), Victim Protection, Criminal and Social Mediation (GIUR-14/A);
  • Socio-Psychological Area: Family, Criminal, Educational, Social and Intercultural Mediation (GIUR-09/A), Intercultural Mediation and Conflict Management (GIUR-09/A)

Upon completion of the degree programme, career opportunities in both the public and private sectors fall within two main areas:

  1. Linguistic and Cultural Mediator, operating in: public institutions within social, health, and educational services; private non-profit sectors (such as Civil Protection, the Red Cross, and NGOs); international companies as a Multicultural Communication Expert. Restorative Justice Mediator, a newly established professional figure as provided for by the Cartabia Reform (Law 134/2021).
  2. The Restorative Justice Mediator will operate in Restorative Justice Centres (to be established also within Local Authorities), at Courts and Juvenile Courts. This is the professional figure who facilitates victim-offender conciliation, coordinates family group conferencing, and manages sentencing circles.
