Friday, February 27 at 3:30 PM, Professor Federico Aversa

On Friday, February 27 at 3:30 PM, the seminar entitled “Overtourism: Causes and Impacts. How Mass Tourism Affects the Lives of Local Communities” will take place in the Aula Magna.
The speaker will be our faculty member, Professor Federico Aversa.

The seminar explores the dynamics of overtourism and its profound impact on the socio-economic fabric of the most sought-after destinations..
The triggering factors will be analyzed, including the boom in short-term rentals, low-cost flights, and the influence of social media
During the event, it will be highlighted how mass tourism is transforming urban centers.

The focus is on the direct consequences for residents’ daily lives: from the soaring cost of living to the housing crisis, as well as gentrification (from the English gentrification, derived from gentry, meaning the lower nobility or bourgeoisie — a process of radical urban, economic, and social transformation affecting working-class or historically deprived neighborhoods of a city) and the loss of neighborhoods’ cultural identity.

The ultimate goal is to provide a critical interpretative framework and to foster a debate on the strategies and policies needed to promote more sustainable tourism, capable of balancing the visitor economy with the quality of life of the local population.
